Warning: New Facebook Tool Could Spell TROUBLE
So, one day I’m on a friend’s wall posting a nice little quote and thanking her requesting me as a friend when I noticed another post someone left on her wall. It went a little something like this: Hey Mary, here’s a powerful inspirational video I thought you’d enjoy, etc. with a Youtube video attached. Now there was something intriguing to me about the message because another link was attached. I clicked on it and you won’t believe what I found.
Now being a Criminal Justice major and having worked several years in corporate America as a internal private investigator, I’m predisposed to research. I’m like a hound dog on a mission and I can’t let up until I get the facts, so I was naturally inclined to click on that link and follow the trail and here’s what I discovered.
There’s a new Facebook tool that you may not be aware of. In fact, it was just released to the general public on July 6th. You may have been on the receiving end of this tool, and not even realized it.
Here’s what this tool does and it’s pretty amazing….
It allows you to have your very own customized Facebook application. Now what does that mean exactly? It means that you can now send personalized wall posts to ALL your friends and those posts can be either text, video, image or audio. Brilliant, right? Let’s say you have 3,000 friends, how long would it take you to send them all a personalized message? When I say personalized, I mean with their name, just as you would do in Aweber. You can include action links to your blog, video, etc.
But, stop the presses….
If you’re anything like me, you also see the potential for abuse and major issues with Facebook, like getting your account suspended or banned for sending thousands of messages simultaneously.
So, being the old sleuth that I am, I picked up the phone and got in touch with the actual developer and founder of the software and here’s what I was told.
The messages are not sent all at once. They are throttled at a pace of 10 messages per minute, as to appear like a human and not a bot. Hence, it will send about 600 messages every hour.
He told me, “knock on wood” (his words) that no one has ever had their Facebook account banned, although they may have had certain applications disabled, like not being able to include links in messages anymore.
Bring on the SPAM
Now, we all know that once this thing gets out there, it will ignite a deluge of posts from all the uninformed spammers posing as “network marketers” and that’s the problem, along with possibly having your account banned. Although, to the developer’s knowledge, it hasn’t happened yet, it is very much a possibility.
To his credit, I will say, he is a true marketer and has worked in advertising for many years. Before July 6th, this product was only used with his private clients to build their marketing campaigns. He expressed what unfortunately most marketers don’t understand that this tool is intended to “build relationships”, not spam people with business links.
To that end, he’s releasing a how to market properly and build an email list component to this software as well. Be forewarned, he said the price will go up, once that is added, but anyone who jumps in before that will be grandfathered in at the original monthly cost.
What are some results?
Well, I know some marketers using this and one had 500 people added to their fan page overnight, yet another had some of their Facebook apps disabled as a result of sending about 700 messages, but their account was not banned. So, you be the judge. To some, the rewards and benefits just may outweigh the risks.
A carefully thought out campaign using this tool could do wonders for your business. One of the developer’s clients is a success coach who only uses it to send daily inspirational and quotes of the day and as a result his business has skyrocketed.
Where Can You See More About This?
Here’s the link to see more about this tool and no, I am not an affiliate (though I may kick myself later).
I’d love to know what you guys think about this. Do you think this is a good idea? I think it’s a great tool, but for right now, I’m a little apprehensive about trying it, but I may do so in the future. Is there anyone out there who’s trying it now? If so, what have your results been?
Tools are only as good as the person using them. To use or any other tool without proper marketing skills and training is like driving a car without brakes. The car is powerful and it’s moving but inevitably, it will crash and burn.

I saw this and had some post already on my page. I suppose it’s good but how do you build relationships with people using an automated tool? But what about when it comes to building ongoing long lasting relationships, or sending out birthday wishes, or responding to a specific post. The goal is to learn people and it’s hard to do with a tool though it’s possible.

I agree Laron. I think too many may mistake this as actual marketing and it’s not. It may be a tool to initiate a relationship, but at some point, you have to come from behind the computer and make real connections.
Hey Fontella
I am not crazy about tools like this, it takes the engagement out of social media
Plus it is a quick way to have your account closed

I’m with you Peter. It’s too new to tell right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if and when FB catches on and shuts it down.
Kudos to your for doing all this digging. This is really amazing. I can see that this might be a good tool in the right hands but a bad one in the wrong hands. Unfortunately there are more people on Facebook who are marketing wrong and spamming people than those interested in forming relationships. It does not sound like something I would have time to mess with, but please let us know how it goes.

Thanks Nicole,
I don’t see me using it in my business either any time soon. You’re spot on when you say in the right hands it can be golden, but in the wrong hands, it’s just automated spam bot.
Thanks for the in depth analysis, will check it out and make a decision. There are many tools out there and one has to make informed decisions about their use. Ultimately a relationship cannot be substitued but this may help bring in those potential relationships. Cheers, Mark

Hey Mark,
Thanks for stopping by. You’re exactly right. If used a tall, it needs to be as a supplement and not a substitution to building actual relationships.
Hi Fontella – sounds like a fabulous tool in the right hands for sharing value. I bet the spammers will love it too… Great post, thanks :0)

Aww yes Gloria. The ever present good vs. evil network marketer.
HI Fontella,
at the moment, I don’t see how I could this use this tool. I agree with Peter Fuller at this point. Thanks for sharing anyway.
Take care

Appreciate it Kareem. Thanks for dropping by.
Hi Fontella,
As you rightly say it’s only as good as the person using it. I fear that the system will be abused no matter how much training the developer provides. It will be just so tempting for some so-called network marketers to not use as a spamming tool. However, like you I am intrigued so will be checking it out.

Hey Tristam,
I agree. We’ll just have to wait and see. Even since posting this article, I’m getting at least 5 posts a day on my wall from people obviously using this tool. It’s annoying me already.
Hi Fontella! I loved this. As with anything I can see how this can potentially be a problem. However, it can leverage my time. I don’t know that I will use myself, I guess that’s why I have a fb group so that I can mass message, though the personalization feature is a lovely touch. Anyway we will see.

Hey Golda,
Those are the appealing features to it, but like you, I don’t think I’ll be using it.
Great post.. and I have to agree that the tool you are speaking of is a brilliant idea. However, there are those bad apples that like to abuse things and ruin it for the rest of us. I guess you cant do anything about those spam addicts… Keep the great content comming

You;re most welcome. Thanks for dropping by the blog.
hi Fontella
Facebook has brought in new rules in an attempt to stop spamming. Adding new friends has to be done in a 2 step process now. But of course we are all in network marketing so we must all take responsibility.
The idea of this software to send messages to all friends is interesting but there is another way to do this. Start your own FB group; invite people to join; send regular group messages. I am building great relationships like that, with people who want to communicate with me.
all the best

Hey Charlie,
Thanks for pointing that out. That is the right way to build relationships and message your friends, fan pages and groups. There’s tremendous value and leverage in using them.
Very cool tool, thanks for sharing!
Charlie, that is a great idea you have with starting a group to use the tool. Good Thinking.
Keep the great content coming Fontella!
